What is Vetmedin for dogs?

Vetmedin (pimobendan) is the first-line prescription treatment for congestive heart failure (CHF) in dogs caused by the two most common canine heart diseases — mitral valve disease (MMVD) and dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM). It helps a weakened heart pump more efficiently, improving quality of life and, in studies, extending the time dogs live comfortably with heart disease.

How Vetmedin works

Pimobendan is an "inodilator" — it does two jobs at once: it strengthens the heart muscle's contractions (positive inotrope) and gently widens the blood vessels the heart pumps against (vasodilator). The result is more effective circulation with less effort from the heart.

Vetmedin strengths and dosing

Vetmedin chewable tablets come in 1.25 mg, 2.5 mg, 5 mg and 10 mg strengths. The label dose is a total of 0.5 mg/kg per day, split into two doses given about 12 hours apart, roughly one hour before food. Heart medication plans are individual — always follow the exact strength and schedule your veterinarian prescribes, and never stop or adjust it without their guidance.

Safety and side effects

Vetmedin is generally well tolerated; the most commonly reported effects are mild digestive upset or reduced appetite. It's used as part of an overall cardiac plan — your vet may combine it with diuretics or other heart medications and will schedule regular re-checks to fine-tune the plan.
