It started, as these things tend to, with a bill. One of us is a pharmacist — the kind of dog owner who reads dosage tables for fun. When one of his two dogs needed a medication, the quote came back at three and a half times what he knew it cost to source and dispense. A 350% markup, give or take.
He paid it. His dog needed it that day, and the counter knew it.
That evening he called the rest of us — four pet parents who, between us, have spent our working lives in different corners of healthcare. We compared notes and kept landing on the same conclusion: human pharmacy has spent twenty years getting better. Clearer prices. Mail order. A pharmacist a message away. Pet pharmacy, mostly, hasn’t.
Prices swing wildly from counter to counter. Comparing them is nearly impossible. And somewhere in the middle of it all, somebody still wants you to send a fax.
