What is Apoquel for dogs?

Apoquel (oclacitinib) is a prescription tablet that controls itching and inflammation caused by allergic skin disease in dogs — including environmental allergies, flea allergy dermatitis and atopic dermatitis. It starts relieving allergic itch within 4 hours and controls it within 24 hours, without the side effects associated with long-term steroid use.

How Apoquel works

Oclacitinib is a selective Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitor. It interrupts the itch-and-inflammation signalling that allergens trigger in your dog's immune system — calming the scratching, licking and chewing cycle so irritated skin can recover.

Apoquel strengths and dosing

Apoquel is available in 3.6 mg, 5.4 mg and 16 mg tablets. The label dose is 0.4–0.6 mg/kg, given twice daily for up to 14 days and then once daily for maintenance. Your veterinarian determines the right strength and schedule for your dog — always follow the directions on your prescription. Apoquel is for dogs at least 12 months old.

Safety and side effects

The most commonly reported side effects are mild digestive upset (vomiting, diarrhea) and lethargy.
